Shorter, Faster, Louder

As a self-proclaimed shorty, I've been dealing with my (lack of) height nearly all my life. In elementary school, I was constantly teased for my shortcomings (get it?!). Nowadays, I can't believe I was so bothered by being called short. I mean, seriously, so what? You're seven inches taller than me. And...? Though I don't despise my height anymore (which hovers somewhere between 5'1-5'3, depending on the driver's license), it certainly affects my life. On the plus side, I never have to duck going under doorways or worrying about smacking my head on a low hanging branch. Not to mention dudes seem to love tiny girls. Something about seeming big and manly and protective or something.

On the negative, going to shows means I always have to stand right against the stage or I can't see anything. Movie theaters must be scouted out at least fifteen minutes prior to the start, to ensure that I don't get stuck behind some beanpole with a large head. And I'm probably one of the few people who must make sure every house I live in has a giant step stool, so that I can put way dishes on the top shelves or change lightbulbs or even hang up posters.

Fashion is by far the worst aspect of being short. Though heels help, I feel as though I'm constantly struggling to disguise my height, lengthening my body by playing with proportion. I'm in awe of girls like Sara of Waiting 2 Be A Millionaire, Elizabeth of Delightfully Tacky, and Mel of Idée Géniale. All fall under the 5'4 marker, but you could never tell looking at their photos. They're stylish, creative, and know how to dress their bodies. I'm constantly taking tips, but man, some days I just feel short. Oh to be 5'9....I can only dream!

How do you guys deal with your least favorite body features?

Tank Top: H&M
Dress Shirt: H&M
Jeans: Forever 21
Belt: Vintage (Sweet Jane- Philadelphia, PA)
Wedges: Spring
Sunglasses: Forever 21

  1. I, too, am a teeny girl at only 5'2. I can't decide which is worse: going to shows and standing behind tall boys or figuring out how to look taller without wearing heels everyday.

Usually, I just depend on shorter skirts. I mostly shop at places like F21, because they tend to sell smaller clothes. What would be really short on an average girl usually fits me just perfectly. I really want to learn how to sew because whenever I find a gem at a thrift shop, I need to ship it to my grandmother's house for a hemming. Oh, height!

That aside, I just wanted to say I love your blog! I only recently stumbled upon it, but I'm from the Philadelphia area and we share similar styles, so it's neat to see how someone else utilizes the weather/environment. (Not sure if that makes much sense, but regardless, thanks!)

  2. I also come in between 5'1"-5'3" and I've realized I just can't wear anything that hits mid-calf. Tights are definitely elongating and skirts about the knee.

Concerts are the WORST--you're so right!!

  3. your fourth pose is great! the white outlining the the black top with that wide belt makes you into a gorgeous hour glass figure. having the cardigan tucked further back cinching at the waist shows off the best feature of the female body, tiny waist and curvy hips. hoot hoot mama!

  5. love your boots. hm. least favorite feature: my incredibly crooked nose. i just never ever pose with the camera straight head on. head is always tilted every so slightly, and through the magic of angles, my nose doesn't look so crooked no more...

  7. I didn't realise you were a 'shorty' till you pointed it out, so you must be doing something right! I wish I was taller, but I never will be so I just have to get over it, life's too short to waste trying to change the unchangeable (unless one day a miracle stretching machine is invented)

  9. I was linked to your blog from Halcoholic - and I love it! Interesting post, here... I have the COMPLETE opposite problem that you have. I am 6ft tall, and can never wear heels, or find jeans long enough, or shoes big enough. I was SO awkward and uncomfortable in Jr. High... and I envied all you petite girls because you were smaller than all the boys. But I learned to deal with it, found a strapping bf - standing at 6'5 - and learned how to dress for my figure. We've all got our issues, and we've got to adapt to them, make them shine! You certainly have... you have great style and I never would have known that you were 5'1"-5'3". You are beautiful, girl!

  10. I'm 17, 5' and constantly sturggle to find clothes that perfectly accentuate the right... assets. Oh how I would kill to be 1-3 inches more taller like you (depending on your driver's license, of course). But yeah, haha. I'm constantly dependent on shorter shorts, tights, and high-waisted skirts!
